# FULL BRAIN data: licence and credits

The files in this folder (`flywire783.bin`, `flywire783.json`) are derived from
the **FlyWire** whole-brain connectome of an adult female *Drosophila
melanogaster*, public release **v783**, by the FlyWire Consortium (Princeton
University and collaborators): <https://flywire.ai/>, data from
<https://codex.flywire.ai/>.

You may share and adapt them, as long as you give credit to FlyWire, link the
licence, say what was changed, and don't use them for commercial purposes. No

## What was changed

Made with `tools/build-brain.mjs` in the GitGud.WTF repository:

- Connections between the same two neurons were summed over brain regions, and
only pairs joined by at least 5 synapses were kept (2,700,513 pairs,
  34,153,566 synapses).
- Each neuron got one sign from its predicted neurotransmitter, taken as the
transmitter with the highest average prediction over its synapses. GABA and
glutamate count as inhibitory and everything else as excitatory, as in
  Shiu et al. (2024).
- One 3D point per neuron was flattened to a front view for the brain monitor.
- Everything was packed into a small binary file (format described in
`tools/build-brain.mjs`). `flywire783.json` lists the neurons the game talks
to: looming detectors, wind and sugar sensors, and descending neurons.

The game simulates the wiring with the leaky integrate-and-fire model and
constants of Shiu et al. (2024). Their code is under the MIT licence.
